Today in “Things you’ve always wondered but never thought to ask at the right time”.

I have kicked the sheets clean off my bed before. I’ve smacked my wife in the head and I’ve sent my dog flying. All because of involuntary jerks at the brink of slumber. Scientists think it’s the result of the final moments of a battle between your sleep and waking cycles.

Deep in the core of our brain, a region called the reticular activating system controls our feeling “awake”. Elsewhere, near the point where the nerves from the eyes cross inside your head, the ventrolateral preoptic nucleus senses the cycles of light and dark and shifts our brain to a deep sleep mode.

As your waking motor system teeters on the brink of control at that point just before the VLPO takes over, WHAM, KICK whatthehell?!

Now you know. Sleep tight.

Computer programming books always have the most interesting covers.  This is the book I’ll be using for my compilers class next semester.  

I highly recommend that you supplement this book with something like Engineering a Compiler. Much more readable than the Dragon Book.

Looks like someone read The Mind Map Book :).

Here’s the thing: WE DON’T EXECUTE PEOPLE IN THE US FOR SMOKING MARIJUANA.

The STATE doesn’t do it. PRIVATE INDIVIDUALS don’t get to do it.

Smoking marijuana is not an executable offense.

FYI, you’re going to hear lots of leaks like these as the trial of George Zimmerman nears. You’re going to hear about Trayvon Martin’s size, and about his history, and a lot of other stuff. You’re going to hear it from Zimmerman’s family, and from the Sanford officials embarrassed at not arresting Zimmerman at the time.

What you need to remember is this: George Zimmerman created the confrontation that led to Trayvon Martin’s death. As the Sanford PD report said, had Zimmerman simply remained in his car and waited for law enforcement officers to arrive, no confrontation would have occurred. Instead, whatever else might have happened, Trayvon Martin would have been alive at the end of the night. And none of us would have ever known his name or George Zimmerman’s name.

Which is how it should be.

Don’t get lost in the trivia. Focus on what matters. And what matters is that George Zimmerman followed Trayvon Martin against law enforcement officials’ requests. That was his choice — and his responsibility.

Interesting infographic in bilingualism in the U.S. No doubts, you benefit a lot from learning a new language. It’s like fitness for your brain.

What I found very interesting there is that the number of Russian speaking people in the U.S. nearly quadrupled during the last 30 years. I believe, by 2012, the number of Russian speaking people in the U.S. is about to reach 1 million.

I thought going to comp sci tutoring would help

instead I’m super frustrated and upset because the tutor didn’t help me, he just told me to reconfigure my whole program.  notwhatIneeded.  Ugh.

It’s like my biggest fear of tutoring realized.  Somebody telling me to do all these complicated things and in the end not helping.
